Two more bus companies shut down

This is just CRAZY! I cant imagine stuffing people like this into one of our party buses here in Seattle.——–

Federal authorities declared two bus companies an “imminent hazard” over the weekend, one of which was cited for carrying passengers in the cargo area.

That makes it three additional carriers shut down by the feds following the cease and desist order for Sky Express, which crashed in Caroline County on May 31, killing four and injuring 53.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ordered Roger Haines, who operates Michigan-based Haines Tours, to immediately stop transporting passengers for his practice of carrying passengers in the cargo compartment.

On May 27, an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer inspecting a Haines Tours bus in Lake Township, Ohio, found six passengers in the cargo area, according to the FMCSA. The tour bus company had been cited for similar violations last year.

“People’s lives were needlessly placed at risk,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Safety is everyone’s responsibility and it begins with practicing common sense.  That means not putting human beings in cargo holds.”

The FMCSA also ordered North Carolina-based United Tours Inc. to stop carrying passengers, saying it “repeatedly used nonqualified drivers [and] failed to comply with other federal records-of-duty regulations,” according to a release. “The carrier was determined to be an “imminent hazard” to public safety for its use of nonqualified drivers and its failure to comply with federal records-of-duty reporting requirements.”

After a compliance review, United Tours was found to be acting “reckless” and its problems “so widespread as to demonstrate a continuing and flagrant general disregard” for federal safety regulations, according to the release.

Also, on June 9 the FMCSA shut down JCT Motor Coach, Inc., and its affiliated company, JT’s Travel & Charter, Inc., of Atlanta, Ga., for trying to evade an out-of-service order.
