Sometimes the only way to explain your viral NSFW video to your grandma is by coming up with a song.

Haliey Welch, better known on the internet as the “hawk tuah” girl, recently teamed up with musician and TikTok star Jax in order to write a song that could explain what her viral phrase means to her grandmother.

On Tuesday, July 23, the singer, also known as @jaxwritessongs to her 14.5 million followers on TikTok, shared a duet video that featured one of her signature fill-in-the-blank songs.

“This is Haliey and she went to the University of Northern Alabama, but she had to drop out to pay the bills,” Jax sings in reference to Welch, before the viral star notes, “and take care of my grandma.”

The American Idol alum continues to sing that Welch went viral on the internet and now her “granny keeps asking” what her quip means.

The two women then attempt to explain the meaning of the phrase through carefully selected lyrics. They take turns saying that “hawk tuah” means “being selfless,” “you care,” and that it’s “another word for hard work, like rolling up your sleeve and tying back your hair.”

“Hawk tuah means love and affection. Hawk tuah means…” Jax sings, letting Welch fill in the next lyrics. Instead, she just quips, “We’re in a recession, Grandma. Stop asking so many questions.”

The brief collaboration has been positively viewed by Jax’s fans, with many leaving light-hearted comments like, “Young lady, you are going to have the seniors yelling hawk tuah” and “The collab no one expected, but glad we got it!”

In another video, where they outlined some of the more inappropriate responses Welch has received in response to her viral video, Jax wrote that Welch is using the money she’s been making since going viral “to support the grandmother who raised her” and that she’s also “donated to animal shelters.”

“I know she’s making the best of an opportunity she didn’t ask for. I know most of you would do the same,” the singer added.

In June, Welch went viral for her man-on-the-street interview with YouTubers Tim and Dee TV, who asked her, “What’s one move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time?” She enthusiastically replied, “Oh you gotta give him that ‘hawk tuah’ and spit on that thang.”

Since then, Welch has shared her ambitions to move to Los Angeles and said that she hopes to eventually move away from her comments.

“I was being a bit of a smart a– too, ’cause like you’re gonna come up to me with a microphone and ask me something like that? . . . I [didn’t] mean nothing by it [at the time],” she said on the Plan Bri Uncut podcast.

Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter reported that she has signed with the management firm The Penthouse.

Meanwhile, Jax released her first studio album on June 28 with the singles “Zombieland” and “A Song for Chelsea”.
